A 'Shankha' or conch is shell of a large sea snail (Turbinella pyrum) found in the Indian Ocean. Conch shells are being used in a variety of culture and hold highest importance in both Hinduism and Buddhism. They are an integral part of all religious rituals. In Hindu mythology, the 'Shankha' is the sacred emblem of Vishnu, the Preserver God, and symbolizes purity, brilliance, luster, prosperity and auspicious beginning. 'Shankhas' are considered as one of the most auspicious objects that emerged from the sea. When a 'shankha' is blown, it purifies the environment by getting rid of negative energy and evil spirits. In ayurvedic system, its powerful cosmic vibrations are also believed to destroy disease-causing germs in the atmosphere and cure many physical ailments (i.e. skin, stomach, teeth) by drinking the water kept overnight in the 'Shankha'.
