(Glimpses from Nepal and Tibet)
The deities and the iconography of South Asia are bewildering. Even Hindus find it difficult to identify the multiplicity of gods and their attributes. Usually they are familiar only with the faith and traditions of their own locality rather than the sub-continent as a whole.
However, it is possible to pull out from the mass of religious images a few of the most important. Suyog Prajapati has attempted to do, putting them into a historical context and describing their attributes as concisely as possible.
This book is the result of a research in art history, iconology, iconography, linguistics and mythology. The contents here are presented as concisely as possible. Even then the readers should be able to gain clear-cut insight into the complex forms of South Asian and Tibetan art.
After the reader has gone through the pages, they should be able to travel the important heritage sites and find the pleasure in explaining all that they see at various religious centres. They should also be able to understand and describe the sculptures, thankas and other forms of art more clearly and accurately.
